The Gergeti Glacier
The Gergeti
glacier is situated on the southern slope of Eastern Caucasus in the
snow-glacial massif of Jimara-Kazbegi. It sources from an altitude of 5047 m
and flows to 2500 m. The icefall is of 2500 meters and it is more than 10km long.
The glacier flows from 5047 meter onto the Maili Plateau and down to Kazbegi
Region. Like other glaciers the Gergeti glacier flows and therefore there are
lots of crevasses of different depths which give the best opportunity to climb
the glacier. There is a hotel at an altitude of 3700 m next to the glacier.
Day 1:
Arrival.
Meeting at
Day 2: Drive to Kazbegi from
Day 3: Ascend to the camping lodge (3700 m above
sea level) via the Gergeti glacier. Overnight at a highland hotel -“Bethlehem
Hut”.
Day 4: The glacier climbing through the crevasses of
10-25 meters of depth under the supervision of an instructor. Return to the camping
lodge in the evening.
Day 5: Walk back to Kazbegi. Drive to
Day 6: Departure.
