Mtskheta – Ananuri

Excursion begins from Mtskheta – an ancient city near Tbilisi. Mtskheta was a capital of the Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from 3^rd century BC. Here Georgians accepted Christianity in 317. Enjoy Mtskheta highlights: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (XI century) and Samtavro Monastery (XI-XIII centuries). The robe of Jesus Christ is buried within Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Monasteries in Mtskheta are some of the most significant monuments of the Georgian Christian architecture.

After Mtskheta, we depart to Ananuri via Zhinvali reservoir. Visit to Ananuri fortress. Ananuri - a splendid ensemble - was the patrimonial residence of the Eristavs (the rulers) of Aragvi. There was a castle fortress of the late feudal period (XVI-XVII centuries) in Ananuri, which protected the entrance into the Aragvi gorge. The complex unites various civil, military and religious constructions, where the dominant is a church of the Blessed Virgin.
