During the reign of Queen Tamar Vardzia was the main theological
seminary where there were 2000 monks. In
the modern days Vardzia is a major tourist attraction in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia. About three hundred apartments and
halls remain visitable, and in some tunnels the old irrigation pipes still
bring drinkable water.
Day 1: Departure to Borjomi passing an ancient town and former capital of
Georgia – Mtskheta. Visit to the highlights of the town: Svetitskhoveli
Cathedral (XI century), Jvari Monastery (VI century). Arrival at Borjomi. Visit
to the Romanovs Palace . Overnight at a hotel.
Day 2: Departure to Vardzia. Picnic. Return to Tbilisi .
