Vardzia – Samtskhe-Javakheti

Vardzia is one of the most famous towns in Georgia cut in the rock. It was founded in XII century during the reign of King George III.

During the reign of Queen Tamar Vardzia was the main theological seminary where there were 2000 monks.  In the modern days Vardzia is a major tourist attraction in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia. About three hundred apartments and halls remain visitable, and in some tunnels the old irrigation pipes still bring drinkable water.

Day 1: Departure to Borjomi passing an ancient town and former capital of Georgia – Mtskheta. Visit to the highlights of the town: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (XI century), Jvari Monastery (VI century). Arrival at Borjomi. Visit to the Romanovs Palace. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 2: Departure to Vardzia. Picnic. Return to Tbilisi.
